PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE

AUGUST 11, 2004

MINUTES

Call Meeting to Order

The meeting was called to order at 3:20 p.m.

Members Present

Paul Skrede, Jon Monson, Public Works Supervisor Jerry Hudlow, Administrator Dana Young

Final Payment to S.M. Hentges ($5,000.00)

Discussion was held on the request for final payment to S.M. Hentges in the amount of $5,000.00 for the Bridge Approach Project. Jon Monson questioned whether payment should be made to S.M. Hentges when there were still unresolved drainage issues on Cottagewood Road following the overlay of this street last year. Paul Skrede agreed that S.M. Hentges is responsible for making the final corrections to resolve the drainage problems. The Committee recommended that S.M. Hentges should be required to repair the street where the ponding of water had caused portions of the street to deteriorate before receiving final payment.

Final Resolution on the Bituminous Curbing on Minnetonka Boulevard

Discussion was held on the appearance of the bituminous curb installed by Bituminous Roadways on Minnetonka Blvd. Jon Monson stated that he felt that the bituminous curb on the west side of Minnetonka Blvd should be removed. He stated that the remaining curb on the east side was passable. Jerry Hudlow stated that once the curb is backfilled with a gradual grade the curb should hold up. He stated that the curb on the west side is 6" high as opposed to the 4" that were specified due to the fact that the 4" shoe in the curbing machine had broken down. Further discussion was held on the marks that had effected the street striping and areas where there had been double striping.

The Committee recommended contacting the contractor to see if there was a method to clean up some the the areas that were striped and to remove a section of the bituminous curb on the west side that had been installed too far up a hill south of Dale Avenue.

Aquatic Weed Removal

Dana Young stated that he met with Tom Sverth on August 9th and Mr. Sverth stated that he would prepare cost estimates for hand-removing aquatic weeds at the Main Beach and Nocomo Beach. Jon Monson stated that he had been quoted a price of $0.09 per foot. The Committee recommended that the City contract with Mr. Sverth to remove aquatic weeds at the Main Beach for a cost not to exceed $500.00.

Water Fountain on Wellhouse

Discussion was held on installing a water fountain on the wellhouse for an estimated cost of $500.00 - $250.00 for the water fountain and another $250.00 for the installation. Discussion was held regarding drain requirements. Jerry Hudlow stated that he would contact the State Health Department to inquire about drain requirements for water fountains.

Paving Quotes on Expanding Bituminous Pad in front of the Sand/Salt Shed

The Committee reviewed the following quotes on the expansion of the bituminous pad in front of the Sand/Salt Shed in order to better accommodate the mixing of sand and salt for snow removal operations.

$3,500.00

The Committee rejected the quotes for constructing a roadway from Minnetonka Blvd to the Sand/Salt Shed due to cost concerns and the fact that the construction of the roadway would not be essential for public work activities.

Jon Monson exits at 4:10 p.m.

The Committee recommended that the City Council accept the bid submitted by Metro Paving in the amount of $4,200.00 for the installation of a 35’ x 80’ bituminous extension to the existing pad in front of the Sand/Salt Shed.
