Elections - 2012

 

2012 Elections

State Primary will be held on Tuesday August 14 and the General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 6.

Polling Location:

To quickly locate your polling location, visit the MN Secretary of State Pollfinder website:    http://pollfinder.sos.state.mn.us/

Precinct 1:                   Deephaven City Hall – 20225 Cottagewood Road

Precinct 2:                   St. Therese Community Room – 18323 Minnetonka Blvd

 The Primary Election is a partisan election; you cannot cross parties while voting on the Primary Ballot. 

 Deephaven will have a city election as part of the General Election on November 6.

City Offices Open Beginning 2012

Mayor – Two year term of office.

Two Council seats – Four-year terms of office. 

 Filing for City Council

Filing Opens – Tuesday, July 31

Filing Closes – Tuesday, August 14

Complete Filing Application at the City Offices - Fee:  $2

Stop over to the City Hall to file for City Council or you can print the Candidate Filing Application from the website and mail it in with your $2 filing fee.

 Voter Registration

To vote, you must be:

  • A citizen of the United States
  • At least 18 years old on the day of the election
  • A Minnesota resident for at least 20 days prior to the election
  • Properly registered.

 Who needs to register to vote?

  • Individuals who have never registered to vote.
  • Individuals who have moved or changed their name since they last registered.
  • Individuals who have not have not voted at least once in the last four years.

 Where to pre-register?

  • City Hall, 20225 Cottagewood Road
  • All Hennepin County Libraries
  • Hennepin County Service Centers
  • Hennepin County Government Center, 300 South 6th Street, Minneapolis
  • The Secretary of State’s Office

Deadline to pre-register:

  • July 24, 2012 for the Primary Election
  • October 16, 2012 for the General Election

 Election Day Registration – Proof of Residence

If you are not able to pre-register, you can register on Election Day.  To do so, you must provide election judges at your polling location with certain acceptable forms of identification to prove your eligibility, such as:

  • A Minnesota Driver's License, Learner’s Permit, or Identification Card with your current address (or the receipt for renewal or change of the license or I.D.)
  • A “Notice of Late Registration” received from your city clerk if your voter registration application was received after the last day to pre-register.
  • One of the following documents that contains your name and photo: Minnesota driver’s license, identification card, US passport, US military identification card or student identification card from a Minnesota college AND a bill for electric, water, gas, telephone, cell phone, cable TV, sewer or solid waste services with a due date within 30 days of the election that contains your name and current address.
  • Another registered voter living in your precinct who will come to the polling location with you to vouch for your residency.

 Absentee Voting

Starts 46 days prior to the elections                                                                     

Primary Election Absentee Ballots Available:  June 29th - August 13th

General Election Absentee Ballots Available:  September 21st – November 5th   

Absentee Ballots

Eligible voters may vote by absentee ballot if they are unable to vote in person on Election Day for any of the following reasons:

  • Absent from the precinct on Election Day
  • Illness or disability
  • Unable to go the polling place due to a religious holiday or beliefs
  • An election judge serving in another precinct

 Absentee voters have the following options:

  • Vote in person during regular business hours starting 46 days prior to Election Day; or during the additional voting hours
  • Complete the entire process by mail – download an Absentee Ballot Application (not available at this time, please check back) and mail or fax the completed application to:
